What is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves that generally results in sensations of tingling, numbness, or burning, muscle weakness, or pain in the affected area. Although neuropathies frequently start in your hands and feet, other parts of the body can be affected. Similar to electrical wires, nerves in the human body can short circuit and misfire signals to the brain when they sustain damage. This can result in a broad range of symptoms, all of which are uncomfortable and challenging to live with. More than 20 million Americans are currently affected by neuropathy, varying from uncomfortable to debilitating. If left untreated, neuropathy can lead to worse complications like a gangrene infection or even an amputation. Book an appointment with the Bloom Physical Medicine experts to find out if you are a candidate for our treatment.

What Causes Neuropathy?
The nerve damage behind neuropathy can occur due to many causes, such as poorly controlled diabetes, which accounts for about 60 percent of cases. The cause is unknown for over 20 percent of cases, but other causes include chemotherapy, HIV, kidney disease, shingles, autoimmune diseases, hereditary disorders, and alcoholism.
What is the Treatment for Neuropathy?
The Bloom Physical Medicine experts will conduct exhaustive functional exams on the nerves in your body to find out if there is nerve damage and whether it is neuropathy, and if it is at a point that it can be treated. Following our specialist’s assessment, they will create an individual treatment program that is designed specifically for you based on your symptoms and the progression of your neuropathy. Treatments could include a laser light treatment to stimulate angiogenesis, horizontal electrical wave therapy, or platelet rich plasma injections.
